Kids Beds Bunk
Bunk beds can add drama to kids' rooms, and they also provide them with a sense of adventure. Ms. Keenan adds a shelf to store books or a reading lamp in every sleeping nook to make bunk beds more appealing to children.
Many of our bunk beds for kids can be made into two twin beds. This is a great option for those who plan to move them into their own bedroom at some point. Pick from finishes like brushed white, gray and rich walnut.
Stairs and Ladders
If you're looking for bunk beds for kids there is the option to select between ladders or stairs. Ladders are less expensive and easy to install and provide an easy way to climb into the bed at the top. They are also more secure than stairs as they provide a wider surface area for children to walk on and include a handrail that is integrated. There are grooves on the steps to avoid slips when climbing up and down the bed.
If you prefer the design and appearance of stairs, they could make a more elegant addition for your bunk bed. They can also be used in rooms with limited space since they don't protrude as ladders. They can be constructed from metal or wood and can be matched to an array of bedroom styles. Some staircases come with storage drawers which can be an excellent way to expand the space of a bunk bed.
Another thing to take into consideration when deciding between stairs and a ladder is the age of your child. While it is recommended that no one sleep on the top bunk before the age of 6, older children who are comfortable climbing vertically may be better off with stairs instead of a ladder. If you are planning to use your bunk bed for guests, such as older children or adults with limitations in mobility, it's best to choose stairs.
A straight staircase that runs along the sides of the bunk requires at least 95" of space on each side. If you don't have the space, you can opt for the u-shaped stairs that doesn't require as much space, but still allows you to access the top bunk safely and safely. Some beds allow you to detach the stairs when not in use. This reduces the footprint of the bed, making it more versatile for multipurpose spaces. There are also staircases that connect to the end of the bed and eliminate the requirement for a separate handrail, and makes it easier for children to climb up and down.
Guard Rails
Guard rails give kids the confidence and independence to climb in and out of bed on their own. They must be set in a proper way to ensure that there are no gaps or loosening between guardrails and the frame of the bed. If you choose to use guard rails, be sure to follow the directions of the manufacturer and examine them on a regular basis for any looseness or holes which could cause entrapment.
Keep bunk beds out of electrical appliances and other things that could be projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Also be sure to position bunks away from windows, which could be a danger to fall in the event that children climb on the top of the bed.
You may want to install an evening light on the ladder to illuminate the steps up and down if your child wakes at the night to go to the bathroom, or if they wake up due to an erupting storm and have to leave their room.
Another great safety feature for bunks is a safety net that can be put up on the top level to keep children from falling off when they're asleep or playing. This is especially a good idea for older kids, who may be more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
Guardrails must be firmly attached to the bunk bed's structure and must not be removed without the use of tools. The guardrail openings that are above the mattress base should not be more than 3.5 inches wide to prevent entrapment or strangulation. Place the wedge block shown on Figure 1 in every opening in the uppermost guardrail member and above the mattress foundation. Apply 33 lbf (147 N) in a direction perpendicular the plane of the large edge of the block for a minute.
It's also an excellent idea to instruct youngsters not to hang anything on the guardrails or ladder such as belts, clothing and sports equipment. Instead, a clothes rack is recommended to ensure that these items do not pose a strangulation danger for your child(ren). Be sure that no more than one child can sleep on the top bunk. This could result in an unsafe imbalance and fall.
Mattresses
When choosing a mattress to use for bunk beds, think about the size of your child and their age. A bunk mattress will last for at least eight years or until siblings are no longer sharing a bedroom and you'll need to select a mattress designed to adapt to the needs of your child and still provide sufficient support as they grow older.

There are a myriad of options for bunk mattress sizes. They are usually twin or full size. If your kiddos suffer from asthma or allergies choose an allergy-free mattress with dust mite barriers and an wicking cover for moisture. Mattresses that have an antimicrobial coating will shield the foam from harmful bacteria and germs.
Another crucial aspect to consider is the feel of your mattress. Kids are usually lighter than adults and need a mattress which is firm, yet comfortable. Many hybrid and latex mattress have a firm side and a soft side to meet the needs of both kids and adults.
Memory foam mattresses can work well for kids, but they're not our first recommendation because they tend to retain heat and could be too difficult on spines of young children. Consider a latex or hybrid mattress that provides solid support and cooling infusions for your child or guests to rest comfortably.
A mattress with a low profile is usually the best choice for kids bunk bed s. They are designed to be smaller than normal mattresses, and to maximize the safety rail height of the top bunk. They also reduce "filler" materials to offer the highest quality in an ultra-slim design.
If your child would like to try a mattress more substantial than a standard bed, consider an innerspring or hybrid model with comfort layers on the top that can be removed or replaced as your child grows. These models will give you a clear idea of how the mattress will perform as your child grows and you can always include a mattress pad or bed skirt to stop it from slipping off the frame. Some beds have side rails or lip built in to prevent this.
Storage
Bunk beds can be an excellent way to save space in shared kid rooms. They can also be a cheaper alternative to buying two separate single beds. Some bunks offer the option of adding an trundle bed that can be hidden under the bottom bunk when it is not in use.
To maximize storage space and space in a room with bunk beds, consider installing a mix kids bedroom furniture set which includes desks, dressers and/or bookcases. This will allow you to keep all of your child's personal belongings including toys, clothing and clothes in one place without cramming them into overstuffed chests or closets. These bedroom furniture sets are available from a variety of retailers and generally meet all federal safety standards.
Stacking bunks can provide an ideal playground for children as kids can transform the spaces below into hidden hideaways or cosy play areas. Designer Elizabeth Georgantas stacked 6 bunks in this room to create the ultimate kids space that can be used for sleeping, playing and even superhero cape twirls. The room is decorated with a bubble wallcovering by Chasing Paper and a ceiling painted in Benjamin Moore Blue Jean to create the ultimate escape.
If you're unable to construct an entryway to your stacked bunk beds then a ladder is an option. They are constructed using a combination of Single Socket Tee Flange, Single Socket Tee, and 90 Degree Side Outlet Tee fittings and can be easily adjusted to increase or decrease the distance between rungs of a ladder to make it easier for little ones to climb. The ladder's rungs are also placed so that they're flush with the ground rather than above it, so that climbing is less intimidating.
Loft beds that can be lifted to just above the ground is another way to maximize the space in the bunk bed room. This lets you slide desks, dressers, or toy chests beneath the beds that are elevated. This is an effective maximize of space and can be a great solution for smaller bedrooms, or in a huge family home where beds have to be able to accommodate many people sleeping.
